What are apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are traditionally recognised as a route to earn as you learn. An apprenticeship combines “on the job” and “off the job” training and provides the apprentice with both practical training and the vital underpinning knowledge that is crucial to develop all round competence as the apprentice works towards nationally recognised qualifications.
At Floortrain, Off the job training involves monthly visits to one of our regional centres and combines theory and practical training, delivered in state of the art training facilities, whilst using a broad innovative range of e-learning solutions within the program.
Who are they for?
Apprenticeships are open to all age groups above 16 years-old whether you are just leaving school, have been working for years or are seeking to start a new career. You just need to be living in England and not taking part in full-time education.
You will need to show that you are committed, and be aware of your responsibilities to both yourself and your employer and be happy to work as both part of a team and individually, and be able to use your own initiative.
As well as appealing to newcomers to the flooring industry, lots experienced floor layers prefer to take the apprenticeship route to gain their NVQ as it allows them to focus on specific skills development within the training program.
Apprenticeships offer a structured programme that takes you through the skills you need to do a job well. There are targets and checks to make sure that you are making progress.
Our apprenticeship programs are tailored to suit previous experience and ability levels and range from 12 to 24 months. If you need just one or two days training, that’s what you get. If a learner needs 50 days training in our training bays, that’s what they get. It’s about the needs of the individual and not a “college style” one size fits all model. In fact, all our training centres offer learners’ a “drop in” facility that allows them to practice and develop fitting techniques with one to one expert tuition and supervision and the use of free materials and tools provided by our sponsor manufacturers who have and continue to be incredibly generous in their support of our work.
Length of program
15 - 24 months.
The length of program can vary from learner to learner due to any previous experience etc... All learners undergo an initial assessment to ensure the program length and content is suitable and achievable. Learners with some experience of flooring would perhaps be suited to a 15 month program, whilst newcomers to the trade may need up to 24 months to gain the necessary experience and confidence to achieve the NVQ element of the framework.
Apprenticeships are increasingly recognised as the gold standard for work-based training. There are over 85,000 employers offering Apprenticeships in more than 130,000 locations;
In floor covering occupations, level 2 is the recognised level of competence to be classed as an experienced qualified worker. A level 2 apprenticeship framework is known as an intermediate apprenticeship.
There is no longer a level 3 qualification for floor covering as the qualification was in effect the same as level 2 but with supervision requirements. Floortrain also offer the Occupational Work Supervision (OWS) apprenticeship framework, which is at level 3 and provides learners with an option to enrol on an advanced apprenticeship as well as being an excellent route for a learner to progress within the flooring industry.

On successful completion of the Floortrain flooring apprenticeship the learner leaves with the following qualifications and certificates:
